Lane Community College

Lane Community College holds many core values, such as diversity, integrity, positivity, innovation and collaboration, and is known for fostering achievement and a culture of caring in our community. Actively Caring for People is a movement that a group of students at LCC is sponsoring by joining and promoting. We want to carry the torch of compassion, and pass it on. This can be as small as a simple act of kindness. It’s a smile. It’s holding a door for someone. It’s caring.

We believe that all individuals are capable and responsible for caring for those who surround them on a daily basis. Actively Caring for People is focused on inspiring as many people as possible to commit to a single act of kindness/caring every day, and supports the recognition of caring acts. Whether we’re passing on a smile, a story, or a favor, we feel good to know that we are helping to support a culture of caring and cohesion. With increased understanding and acceptance come support and achievement. We believe we can all make a difference in this world…the best kind of difference imaginable!

I have an actively caring story today from Phoenix, AZ. I’m here through the weekend with some work with the American Academy of Family Physicians. This morning, before my speaking engagement a colleague and I decided to go for a hike. On the way back, we took a short cut to the hotel and ended up lost in a residential area. A local person, seeing us look confused as we were consulting our iPhones, asked if we needed directions, and then just offered to give us a ride back to the hotel. Judging him to be of good character, we took him up on the offer. His name is Alan Kennedy. I gave him my green wristband, which we was delighted about, and he said he would wear it until he found someone to give it to!
    What a great experience!

I was late for school scrambling to get my stuff together when I looked outside and saw it just pouring buckets like it usually does here in Oregon. I normally take the bus since the stop is right out my house, but the rain and me being late convinced me to fire up the ole mini van. I looked and saw some people waiting for the buss, since it was the route to Lane, I asked if they would like a ride to school. They came running without hesitation to load up and make the trip over the hill to school. I had more than plenty of room for everyone and I even had enough room to fit all the huge smiles they had on their faces. I never did get their names but I was just glade I could do something that small and have a huge impact on someones day.

I was hanging out waiting to get checked out at the store and I let this couple go a ahead of me. No biggie or anything and when they were done checking out they gave me this card for being cool I gues. I like the moral to reward people for little things. I will pass on this thing to someone else and see what happens.

I got a card for helping hold the door for a guy in a wheelchair. This is great concept, I hope it sticks around.

I just got this beautiful card from the nicest person for just opening the door for him. Wow what a great idea, I can’t wait to pass this card on.

I received this card after I checked a person out in the cafeteria here at Lane. I was so surprised that I blushed and turned red. This is so cool to set up for our school.
